A wax element is the core of a thermostatic cartridge. It allows shower mixers to effectively temper how hot or cold shower water can be. This little capsule works by using thermal expansion to turn heat energy into mechanical energy. The application of such a principle came into the plumbing industry during the 1970s.

How to Check if a Thermostatic Wax Element in the Bristan SKBQ1503-973C is Functioning Properly?
A thermostat element in good working condition should be able to modify water temperature without any difficulty. If you are having trouble adjusting the temperature or if it fluctuates when you are in the shower, the capsule could be the issue. Performing this simple test will tell if a thermostatic wax element is still functioning as intended.

1. Prepare two small cups of water: one hot and one cold.
2. Holding the capsule by its tip, lower it in cold water and take it out after a few seconds. With the drop in temperature, you should be able to gently push the pin down into the capsule. Mark the spot where the pin and the capsule meet.

3. Next, dunk it in hot water. As the temperature increases, the piston should rise by about three millimetres as the wax expands.
4. Remove it from the hot water and lower it back in the cold water. Remove after a few seconds. Gently push the pin back into the capsule. If it moves down, the thermostatic wax element is operating optimally.
