First, a short and general description about this shower spares. Thermostatic cartridge M15-12 includes a white plastic spline adapter. The cartridge has three O-ring seals, two filter gauzings, and two spline tiers. The body is made of brass. It is a threaded cartridge which means it is screwed right in the shower valve.
The wax thermo-core of the M15-12 thermostatic cartridge is made by Vernet. The company is based in France and has been manufacturing these wax capsules since 1952. The Vernet thermo-core, which is the heart of the thermostatic cartridge, can also be found in many shower cartridges. (Hop on to our Vernet Thermostatic Cartridge Guide if you are interested to know more about how a thermostatic cartridge works.)
With that little introduction about the M15-12 thermostatic cartridge said, it is now time to uncover how to determine if this temperature control cartridge is the part you should buy to get your shower up and running in no time. It will be helpful to take the cartridge out of the valve.
Shower valves are available in a variety of measurements; hence, the dimensions of the cartridge have to be taken into account. The technical information of the M15-12 thermostatic cartridge is posted in the above section. The measurement of the top spline (without the adapter) is about 11mm or 1.1cm and the larger spline tier is about 19mm or 1.9mm.
Now, take a ruler and start measuring the cartridge you have with you. Measure the whole length of the cartridge. Once that is taken, measure the width of the widest part (which happens to be the cartridge threads) and the splines of the cartridge to get its diameter. Is it about the same as the measurements that were given? If it is you are one step closer to being sure that the M15-12 is the thermostatic cartridge you need.
Splines: Every Teeth Counts
The M15-12 thermostatic cartridge has 32 teeth/notches on its top spline tier without the plastic cartridge adapter. The splines connect the cartridge with the shower valve handle. This is why the teeth of the spare part have to match with those in the handle. If it doesn’t match you will not be able to fit the handle at all. Use a pen to mark one of the teeth and start counting from that point.
