Changing your shower system from a hot and cold gravity system to a combination boiler will entail the need for a conversion kit. The Trevi Boost shower valve maintains a gravity fed water system. Switching to a combination boiler will render the Boost cartridge ineffective, thus, the Trevi Boost to Therm Conversion Kit E960739AA is necessary in order to provide the right balance between water supplies from a new boiler system.

Water Systems: Gravity Fed and Combination Boiler
A water system will influence the strength of the water output from a bath tap or a showerhead. Gravity-fed water systems and combination boiler are two water distributing structures; the former uses low pressure while the latter is an instantaneous water system.

Because of the difference in structure and pressure, changing from a gravity-fed to a combination boiler will require conversion. The Trevi Boost to Therm Kit (E960739AA) is made specifically to help the Trevi Boost cartridge cope with the new system.

Please check out our Water Systems Guide.

Gravity-Fed Water Systems
Water from a hot water cylinder and a cold water tank are fed through the pipes leading to various water outlets inside a home. The cold water feed is installed in the upper part of the house whereas the hot water tank is situated below.

In a hot and cold gravity-fed water system gravity acts as a natural pump moving water down from the cold storage tank to the hot water cylinder where it is made and kept hot.

In a gravity hot feed cold mains fed system, hot water has a lower water pressure than cold water. The uneven pressure between the two supplies is reconciled with the use of a pressure equalizing valve which ensures the water pressure from the mains and the hot water feed are correspondingly as stable as possible.

Combination Boiler
By contrast, a combination water system has one water storage tank called a boiler, hence the name combination boiler. It heats water coming directly from the mains and supplies a shower or tap with hot water instantly. Grit, dirt, and other debris will adhere less to the boiler. The system is also known for being highly-efficient and cost-effective due to less piping.

With a combi boiler, operating more than one tap will result in lower water pressure.

In the UK alone, more than 70 percent of homes are fitted with a combination boiler.
