10 ways to kick start your day! (Part 2)

Following on from our previous article that looked at 5 ways to kick start your day, the following 5 ways are other great ways to maintain a healthy everyday lifestyle. With these 10 ways to kick start your day, you shouldn’t find yourself struggling towards the end of the morning – You’ll be powering through each working day before you know it!

Here are the Healthy Hideout’s top 5 five ways to kick start your day (part 2):

A burst of fresh air! – When we wake up in the morning, your body will be recovering from a state of rest. Oxygen levels will be fairly low, so head straight for your curtains open the windows wide. Even if it’s cold and murky outside, you’ll find that a burst of fresh air will awaken your senses quicker than expected.

Take deep breaths – As you wake up, lying in bed looking at the ceiling, take long deep breaths. Inhale slowly and exhale in the same manner, filling your lungs with fresh oxygen. Breath in through the nose for 4 seconds using the lower abdomen, before exhaling for 8 seconds through the mouth. This will help rid the lungs of any stale air taken throughout the evening.

Drink Peppermint tea –  Drinking peppermint tea is not just to be associated with alleviating an unsettled stomach. Peppermint tea can help to optimise brain function whilst helping with nerve function too.

Sun Salutations –  If you practice yoga on a daily basis, you’ll find that a few rounds of sun salutations are a great way of waking the body, improving circulation and sharpening the mind. If you don’t practice yoga, try stretching your body whilst inhaling slowly through the nose and exhaling through the mouth – a truly invigorating experience.

Exercise – Exercising first thing in the morning is certainly the best time to exercise. Once you’ve woken up and had a healthy balanced breakfast, head to the gym for a workout or perhaps go for a jog around the block. The experience alone will wake you right up, ready for the day ahead.

10 ways to kick start your day! (Part 1)

Getting the right start at the beginning of the day can drastically affect your performance and focus throughout the day. Without a routine healthy start to your morning, you’ll find your energy quickly dipping throughout the day. The easiest way to prevent this is to ensure that you kick start your day in the proper manner!

This article is going to be broken down into two parts – The first part contains the first 5 ways to kick start your day! Here are the Healthy Hideout’s top ways of getting your day off to the great start that it needs:

1 – Healthy balanced breakfast – Possibly the most obvious factor to a perfect start to your day, a healthy breakfast is vital to keeping your energy levels high throughout the day. Plenty of fibre, proteins and nutrients are essential which can easily be found through wholegrain cereals, granola, natural yogurt, dried fruit and berries. Try to stay clear of fatty meats, low-fibre cereals and white breads.

2 – Preparation the night before – In order to get yourself up and out there quickly, it’s useful to prepare everything you need the night before. There’s nothing worse than hunting for your car keys in a groggy brain “just-woken-up” state! Make sure everything is easy to find, including your outfit for the day. It’ll also give you plenty of wake-up time, including all important breakfast time.

3 – Snooze Control isn’t your friend–  The snooze button was invented by a lazy person! Just kidding – but although the snooze button may seem like your best friend, it really is not beneficial to your body. Falling asleep only to wake up again 5 minutes later doesn’t necessarily make waking up for the day any easier. Muster up all your willpower and get up and soon as your alarm rings – you’ll thank yourself later in the day!

4 – Regular wake-up times – Waking up at the same time everyday biologically programs our bodies to eventually wake up naturally each day. By waking up in this matter, you’ll find yourself feeling fresher and ready for the day without too much effort.

5 – Waking up in the sunshine – Our bodies respond to darkness by producing the sleep hormone known as melatonin, which is why it’s difficult for many of us to wake up during the winter in a dark bedroom. If you can’t sleep without closing the curtains, be sure to open them as soon as you wake up to allow natural light to flood the room.

Key tips to keep energy levels up!

As we’re based in the UK, The Healthy Hideout is now deep into the winter with Spring not too far away. However, some of us may find that the cold is still having a negative effect on energy levels. Although curling up in front of the fire with a nice warm drink may seem more tempting than a 2 hour session at the gym, the body still requires activity in order to stay alert. Here are the Healthy Hideout’s key tips on keeping your energy levels high, leaving you feeling more awake, ready for each winter day!

  • Exercise – It may seem obvious, and the winter breeze does make it more difficult to gather up enough motivation, but exercise is the bodies natural way of keeping energy levels high. Regular exercise gives the body a natural endorphin high, releasing such chemicals including adrenaline, serotonin and dopamine. Even a few minutes of exercise a day can have a drastic effect on how you feel, whilst regular exercise throughout the week will produce optimum results.
  • Diet – Be careful not to rely on high sugar foods and processed goods to give you a quick energy boost during the day. Quick fixes such as this can result in having drastic energy drops, causing you to search for that next fix – not a healthy process. Try to keep your diet filled with fresh fruit and vegetables, and try to incorporate complex carbohydrates such as brown rice or peanut butter on corn cakes. Keep protein intake high to banish after work “glumness”.
  • Water – We’ve mentioned this in many previous articles on the Healthy Hideout, but do not forget the importance of keeping hydrated even if you’re not feeling thirsty. Taking on board plenty of water helps the body get rid of toxins, whilst helping to battle tiredness. Try incorporating herbal teas to give your body an extra kick!
  • Sleep – The later you fall asleep, the more out of sync you’ll become and the more tired you’ll feel throughout the day. This is because sleeping is linked to light, and our bodies natural response to the dark is to sleep. An earlier night’s sleep will almost guarantee a spring in your step the next day.

You can’t put a price on your bodies health and wellbeing! Try implementing some of the above before this winter is over, so that you may be better prepared for the next.
