Commonplace Shower Valve Problems and the Deva SP037 Thermostatic Cartridge

SP037 Deva thermostatic cartridge is the replacement shower part for SQ204, DYN204 and SAVBDEF Vision valves. These valves can exhibit issues in terms of temperature adjustment, the amount of water output and leaks after years of using it. Here are some common shower valve pain points and how you may address it.

Deva SQ204, DYN204 and SAVBDEF are considered as a thermostatic mixer bar valve. When the shower is turned on, water enters through two pipes: the hot and cold water supplies. The Deva SP037 thermostatic cartridge then mixes hot and cold together to achieve the temperature you set with a turn of the temperature control handle.

The Deva SP037 thermostatic cartridge is one of the hardest working components of a Vision shower valve. In the course of time, shower valve parts, especially the seals of the SP037 / DYN204, become prone to wear and tear. As the O-rings prevent water from seeping out of the cartridge, damaged seals can precipitate leaks.

Another factor that contributes to the deterioration is limescale. This hard water residue can accrue wherever water passes, thus forming a mass that negatively affects the performance of the thermostatic cartridge.


Problem #1: Shower Running On One Temperature (Hot or Cold)
– Make sure that hot and cold water is flowing freely into the shower valve. You can check and clear the valve of clogs by removing the Deva SP037 / DYN204 thermostatic cartridge and flow cartridge. Gradually open water flow to flush out the clog. (Back off any water outlets before turning the shower on to prevent scalding.)

– If the SQ204, DYN204 or SAVBDEF shower valve is clear, check the hot and cold water pressure. The pressure must be equal between the two. Should an imbalance in pressure be the problem, a pressure reducing valve may be installed.

– If there are no clogs and the pressure okay, the issue may rest with the Deva SP037 thermostatic cartridge. Hardened limescale has an abrasive texture that can impair the core of the cartridge as it moves up and down to regulate the water temperature. Replacing the SP037 / DYN204 cartridge may solve the problem.


Problem #2: Water Leaks from the Handle
– A leaking shower can be due to an excess in water pressure. Water pressure can change over time this is why it has to be checked regularly. Tame the pressure down if it is too strong, or install a pressure reducing valve.

– Leaks can be the result of damaged O-rings. The Deva SP037 / DYN204 thermostatic cartridge has three O-rings. When one or all of these seals become dry and crack, water will definitely leak. The best long-lasting solution for this is replacing the temperature cartridge.

The appropriate silicone grease has to be applied on the O-rings of the new Deva SP037 thermostatic cartridge before sealing it in the valve. This prolongs the life of these rubber parts as it protects it from abrasion.
