The 3 Main Principles of Losing Weight!

Losing weight has been touched upon by countless articles, blogs, newspapers and magazines detailing how you can do lots of different things in order to shift the excess fat around your midrift. At the Healthy Hideout we believe there is no miracle cure or magic serum that you take one morning, to find yourself waking up a pound lighter the next day.

Losing weight requires serious dedication from you and you only – that’s the only way you’re going to see serious changes. If you change your attitude towards wanting to lose weight, and actually believing that you can, you’ve got a higher chance of seeing some changes. Easier said than done right? It’s probably why a lot of people invest into personal trainers who shout nothing but confidence boosting (or breaking) statements in your general direction for 60 minutes. It doesn’t work for everyone though.

There are many programs that work for people out there, such as the “Burn the Fat” program at http://www.burnthefat.com. These guys have a proven track record with thousands of satisfied customers who’ve seen the program reap huge results for them personally.

But when it comes to losing weight, you can often find solid results come from sticking to the 3 Main Principles of Losing Weight. It doesn’t get much simpler than this:

  • Decrease calorie intake – If you’re eating more than 2000 calories a day (2500 calories for men) then you’re eating more than the recommended daily intake or RDA. By eating more than your body needs, your body will look to store the excess energy as fat.
  • Increase calorie burn – After maintaining your calorie intake, it’s important to increase your amount of calorie. This is done through exercise, and unfortunately there’s really no other way. Try to commit yourself to at least 30 minutes a day for the best results.
  • Cut down on the bad stuff – This is the most obvious of the three, but it’s important to make extra effort to cut out all the bad stuff from your diet. This includes fizzy sugary drinks, confectionery, chocolate, pastries, baked goods, fast food – the list can go out. Cut out the bad stuff and you’ll see some serious results. You’ll feel better too!

Lose weight eating junk food

Eating a balanced diet whilst maintaining a good level of exercise are two of the key elements to living a healthy lifestyle. One professor of nutrition based in Kansas, USA decided to go against this basic principle in order to fulfil his own premise: Weight loss relies on pure calorie counting – not the nutritional value of the food you intake. He named his diet “the convenience store diet.”

Twinkies were a main source of Professor Huabs Diet

Twinkies were a main source of Professor Huabs Diet

Sticking to a selection of sugary cake treats for 10 weeks including “Twinkies” and donuts, with variety added in the form of Doritos, sugary cereals and Oreos, Professor Mark Huab managed to lose a massive 27 pounds in just 2 months. The key was to stick to 1,800 calories a day, with the average man needing 2,600,  and exceed no more calories than he burned. His body mass index, or BMI, went from 28.8 to 24.9 which is considered normal by local average. He now weighs 174 pounds.

Surely being on such a diet would have negative effects on the body? Well in terms of cholesterol, this certainly wasn’t the case. LDL, or “bad” cholesterol dropped 20 percent whilst “good” cholesterol increased 20 percent. Even bad fats such as triglycerides were reduced by 39 percent. But despite obvious figures, Professor Huab does not recommend his snack-only diet.

“What do these results actually mean? Do they mean that I’m healthier or does it mean how we define health from a biology standpoint, that we’re missing something? I’m not geared to say it’s a good thing to do, I’m stuck in the middle. Without more information I can’t give a concrete answer.”

Even though the results are astounding, it’s good to note that Haub was taking a multivitamin pill and a protein shake daily. Vegetables included two or three celery stalks or a single can of green beans.

An insight into Colonic Hydrotherapy

As we’ve already mentioned one of the hardest detoxes of all can be found in our Lemon Detox article. We thought we’d now take a look at something that sits middle of the range. Although not straight forward, colonic irrigation is seen to be a valuable way to kick start yourself into a full health overhaul, when coupled with a drastic diet change and exercise regime.

What does colonic hydro therapy do?

Keeping a healthy colon is extremely important for general good health and well being, but the delicate balance of the organ can be affected by many contributing factors such as stress, pollution, sugary drinks, processed food, smoking and even certain medicines. Roger Groos, Chairman of the Association & Register of Colon Hydrotherapists explains how there is significant anecdotal evidence that colonic irrigation can improve bowel transit time, alcohol detoxification and help to relieve constipation related headaches.

How do colonic’s work?

Not all of us enjoy the idea or practical issues related to a colonic, but it’s important that you step out of your comfort zone if you want to achieve true results. The basic concept is to pass warm water at a low pressure through the colonic pipes via sterile pipes – bearing in mind our colon is around five feet long! This is then followed by a massage, removing any waste material trapped in the colon. The entire process can last from anything between 30 – 45 minutes depending on how quick you are.

Are colonic’s painful?

The detox creates a sense of “bloatedness” rather than feeling discomfort or pain, and many who’ve already completed the process say that the results are almost immediate. “Those who have had the treatment often comment they feel healthier and lighter, which may be linked to the removal of the leftover waste” states Groos. Of course, the rate of improvement will drastically depend on how much detoxing you’ve done in the past, and how many toxins you’ve got trapped inside you.

If like many of us this is your first true detox, you may be shocked and pleasantly surprised by the results. Will you be heading to your local spa this weekend, or perhaps your local pharmacy for a home kit?

The Lemon Detox!

Continuing on from our “Importance of Detox” article, we though we’d start with what we consider the most difficult detox of all – The Lemon Detox. Utilised by some of Hollywood’s biggest stars including Angelina Jolie, Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow, the Lemon Detox is not designed for the faint hearted. So what does it consist of? Well, you abstain from anything that resembles solid food and survive on Natural Tree syrup diluted with filtered water, lemon juice, cayenne pepper or ground ginger.

What is the Lemon Detox?

The idea follows the eating philosophy of “grazing” – sipping the interesting concoction only when you feel hungry, aiming to take in at least 8 to 10 glasses a day. The Natural Tree Syrup is made from a variety of South East Asian palm syrups and the very best Canadian maple syrup, supplying your body with necessary vitamins and minerals. The lemon juice is added for it’s alkaline properties, whilst the cayenne pepper and ginger combined help speed the process of metabolism, improving overall circulation and the removal of toxins. The detox is expect to last 3 days, but has been known to go right up to 7 days. Pretty epic is you ask me.

When do I start?

The Lemon Detox is nothing new and is now widely available from most health food stores. However, if you do plan to take part in something as extreme as this, please consult your doctor or GP first. If your doctor gives you the go ahead, but your still worried about the entire process, you can book yourself in with the professionals at your local health spa. They’ll help you through the detox, whilst keeping you relaxed throughout.

A word of warning – This detox can cause “cold turkey” from caffeine which causes headaches, tiredness and constipation. Not the most encouraging words, but still worth a shout if you’re committed.

Are you ready for the Lemon Detox?

Are you talkin’ to me?

Whether you want to know your weight or just can’t face it in the morning, there is no escape with the Superior Talking Scale.

When you step onto the scale the euphoric voice tells you your weight and even if its not what you expect you wont care, as the female voice lulls you in an understanding manner. But if your spouse is in the next room the voice can be turned off with a conveniently placed switch underneath the contraption. The much larger than average scale screen makes it easier to read your weight if the voice starts to irritate.

But is the scale truly superior? You may ask. And the answer is a definite yes! It is accurate to within 1% of actual weight, and weighs up to 400 lbs (or 200 kg) in 0.2 lb increments. Its platform measures 14.5 x 11 inches and has ridged squares to stop you slipping.

Now, not only is this made for you lazy few but it will make it easier for the visually impaired or even the blind. It’s a product which should have been made long ago, but if you’re up for a bit of novelty fun this product is certainly for you.
